This Week's Schedule
We have our usual workouts Monday at Hiawatha Davis Rec Center and Thursday at Arapahoe Community College. There is no Tuesday night practice this week. If you usually go to Tuesday nights, please make the effort to make Monday and/or Thursday's workouts. We are moving on to offense this week, and each practice is important.
Saturday we should be back at Hinkley, assuming they'll have repaired their electrical problems. The following Saturday, February 4th, we will most likely have an afternoon practice at DU rather than a morning practice at Hinkley. The weekend after that, February 11th, we move Saturday workouts to Gateway High School in Aurora. See you all soon!
Saturday Schedule Changes
We've had great turnout lately with athletes from 8-18. In order to give various age groups a more effective workout, we are having players 12U and 13 on up arrive at different times. Here is how it will work beginning Saturday, January 21st:
12U's from 9:30am-11:00am, and 13-18 year olds from 10:00am-12:30pm.
12U's should be dressed and on deck at 9:30am for dryland training. This group will have the pool from 10:00am-11:00am. We will follow this same schedule during Youth League.
13-18 year olds will have drylands and 'chalk talk' from 10:00am-11:00am and be in the pool from 11:00am-12:30pm.
Reminder to all athletes: bring a towel on deck with you for drylands to provide a little cushioning for your backs during deck work.
Saturday workouts move to Gateway High School February 11th.
We cannot use Hinkley or Gateway February 4th, but are looking into an afternoon practice at the Denver University Natatorium.
Youth League Starting January 30th!
Looking ahead to some great opportunities, we've decided to have our Youth League begin earlier this year, January 30th through March 31st. We've timed it so that the Youth League will be just past the midway point when we get to the Grier Tournament and conclude just before our annual trip to Albuquerque. This should give us time to bring new players to these fun tournaments. We need more 12U players to go with the great core we have in place, so please talk up the team and bring some people to Youth League.
For people just participating in Youth League, the cost is $150 for the eight-weeks of practice and games (not including the weekend of the Grier tournament). Youth League is included for current, paid members of Colorado Water Polo.
This year, as in the past, we will have one practice and one game each week for that price. If you have any questions, contact coach Mark or coach Kyle.
Snow Policy
If a practice is ever cancelled due to weather, or any other unforeseen problems, we will always try to post an update on the website, put out a team-wide e-mail, and/or get the word out by text message through our captains. Please make sure we have your current e-mail address and that our captains have you or your athlete’s cell phone numbers.
In any storm, weather can be very different from one end of the metro area to the other. We want you to know that you have our support if you decide conditions in your area are not safe for travel. With that being said, this is Colorado and we will have many weather events between now and the spring. Please plan accordingly. Give yourselves extra time to arrive at practice on schedule, and know that arriving late is better than not coming to a practice at all.
Pirates Take 5th at 12U National Championships
The Pirates won their final three games to take 5th place at USA Water Polo's first ever 12U National Championship Tournament. Teams came from Connecticut, Florida, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado.
The final game for the Pirates was the most closely-contested against a very strong Neptunes team. The Pirates led by one at half-time. But the Neptunes came back to tie the game by the end of the 3rd quarter. But tough defense and an aggressive attack by the Pirates led to victory.
Congratulations Pirates! We're very proud of you.
