We're looking forward to another great Pirate road trip!
Back to Normal!
After a couple of weeks of juggled schedules, we are back on track with our usual workout schedule this week. Mondays are back at Hiawatha Davis. We can workout at Smoky this Tuesday. And, Saturday we're back at Gateway.
See you all soon, and thanks for your patience as we worked around these issues with pool time.
NOTE: No practice in Denver on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th.
Water Polo has Homework?!
Players and coaches decided Home Polo sounded better and more fun, but yes, we're asking all of our athletes to do some work on their own time. We're competing against teams which practice 4-6 times a week. Most of our players come 2-3 times a week. We need to try to make up some of that time in two key areas: passing and conditioning.
So, we're asking our athletes to pass at home and do some cardio on non-polo practice days.
For passing, grab a friend, parent or sibling (or a parent-approved wall if needed) and throw. This will help our arm strength considerably. Use proper form! Keep your elbow a little above shoulder height.
18U's - 100 passes (each player)
15U's - 75 passes
12U's - 50 passes
Half of your passes should be 'squat passes'. Catch the ball, squat down slowly with your bottom out (don't let your knees push out past your toes), then rise up and make a good accurate pass.
We also want you doing cardio on non-polo days. Swimming is best, but if you can't get to a pool, ride a bike, run/jog, or use exercise equipment such as stationary bikes, treadmills, etc.
13-18's - 30 minutes
12U's - 15-20 depending on condition
This commitment will help you improve your individual strength and our team performance!

Pirates Take Duke to the Limit 3 Times
Another great Pirate road trip! We had fun and played some great water polo! On the final day, Saturday, we faced off against Duke in three straight finals for the 12U's, 15U's, and 18U's.
Our 12U's claimed another tournament win. They went undefeated for the tournament! Thank you to the Neptune players who joined us for the tournament.
Our 15U Black team took 2nd in a hard-fought final. Our 15U Gold team, featuring many of our newest players got better in each game. All of the players on the Gold team grew tremendously during the tournament.
Our 18U's lost their first game of the tournament against Duke, then won three straight games to earn another shot at Duke in the final. After falling behind early, the 18U's fought back to tie the game in the final minute, but lost by one point.
All of our coaches are so proud of the effort and level of play we saw during the tournament. We hope everyone is motivated to work even harder in the coming weeks as we get ready for our great annual trip to Utah!
Great job Pirates!
Bill Cole took a lot of great photos. Check your e-mail for the link and password to see them all.
Our Community Service Project
Another great day for the Pirates! We had more than 50 people show up to take part in the city of Aurora's High Line Canal Cleanup, March 17th. The crowd included Pirates, siblings, parents, and some friends. Thank you all for taking time to help one of the many great communities represented by our team members.
What a Great Weekend!
The 2nd Annual Grier Laughlin Invitational Water Polo Tournament was a huge success! From the big smiles I saw all around, everyone had a good time. Our coaches are so proud of the effort our athletes made and how much they grew as water polo players. We are also grateful to all of the parents who helped in so many ways: housing visiting athletes and coaches; staffing the scorer's table; providing food and service in the hospitaly suite; tending to the entry station to guide guests, pass out programs, and sell t-shirts. You were all amazing. This teamwide effort from our players and parents resulted in a great event.
The head referee, Tyson, who has reffed all over California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and more came up to me after the final game to tell me it was one of the best run tournaments he's ever been to and that the hospitality was outstanding. Thank you all.
Our coaching staff hopes that all of our players will use the energy and excitement from this tournament to approach practice with more effort and dedication. We have another chance to play in a tournament in just four weeks in Albuquerque. Please email both coach Mark and coach Kyle if you plan to attend. Once we see how many kids we'll have, we'll talk about transportation and costs.
Back to this tournament, we earned trophies in all three divisions including 1st Place in the 12U's. CONGRATULATIONS PIRATES!
You can review game results under the "Grier Tourney" tab at the top of this page. And we'll have lots of great pictures soon from Glenn Harm and Bill Cole. Keep checking back.
What We Do
Colorado Water Polo is a league in the Denver-metro area designed to both introduce the sport to players 8-18 years old, as well as develop players into collegiate and national team athletes.
